This quarterly (or monthly) review of the health, IQ, longevity, and pollution literature, will provide you with some of the most up to date information on these four topics available. Since this is an electronic shareware text, it does not have the typical 6-18 months of delay required for most book, CD-ROM, and even some periodical commercial publishing. I have endeavored, and will continue to endeavor, to provide you with the most current developments in these four fields, from the viewpoint of a molecular biologist/college teacher who is genuinely concerned about the health and learning ability of our children, as well as the world population as a whole. The pollution problem is getting some attention and there have been some small improvements which get played up by politicians and thus the news media, but the bottom line is that the overall situation is still deteriorating and I will present evidence that indicates that many of today's disease epidemics are getting worse, and the most likely culprit appears to be the pollution. Many of these epidemics are worse in the U.S. than elsewhere and it's time to tell our politicians that we're fed up and we're not going to take it anymore.

Since this text is HYPERTEXT, as mentioned above, you can select any underlined blue words like the " VGA endangered species" below, and this new topic will be immediately brought up on the screen. Forgive the occasional unusual formatting but this new version of Hyperwriter has a bug which requires open lines after some links so there are some limitations in what the text looks like. Forgive the very limited graphics also, but the DOS platform is so difficult to work with in SVGA that I may stick with VGA only for the DOS version, but if there is enough demand, I will publish a WINDOWS SVGA version with one of the hypertext windows authoring programs, to provide those of you with SVGA graphics capability, better graphics as well as better memory access. If there is enough demand for a DOS SVGA version I suppose I could be coerced to try a DOS SVGA version but DOS is probably on its way out so I'll need coercion and help to produce a DOS SVGA version.
If there is enough demand for a quarterly (or monthly) text such as this, I will get more editing done on future versions to give it a more polished flow, and better editing.
*UNLIMITED BOOKMARKS & FAST SEARCH
Electronic documents such as this have many other advantages over a regular book, as many of you know. The bookmark feature (described in detail in the online help described above) allows you to mark topics of interest for instant return. This feature can also be turned off if you do not want to be asked about leaving a bookmark on exit. Select File, Preferences, the General folder, and click the " x" off in the Leave Bookmark area to deselect this feature.
The text search features built into the Hyperwriter 4.0 program that was used to put together this document, are the most powerful search capabilities that I have seen. I will discuss some of the boolean search functions in a future edition and an index file will be provided eventually to subscribers which will enable the use of boolean operators such as AND, OR and NOT searches. This sophisticated search program will allow you to search for single words or strings of words, to locate subjects that might otherwise be difficult to find, in an instant. No more searching around through 30 or 100 pages to find something that you are sure you remember an author saying, or searching through 20 pages of references to check a reference. The reader program takes up so much room that there was no room for an index file with this shareware text so the Search feature with this edition is the one found on the Navigate Menu (hidden on top bar) but the plan at present is to make room for an index file as soon as Ntergaid provides a fix for a bug that is presently preventing indexing. Indexed searching will hopefully be available in the near future. Searching this entire document without an index file in the DOS mode can cause a "crash," (due to lack of sufficient memory) which will necessitate a reboot, so if you do any searches, I would limit them to individual topics unless it is a fairly common word that appears frequently Indexed searching will be more useful as the text gets above 500 pages in length anyway, and should not be needed as much at the present size of 450 pages. Scott Johnson, Director of Marketing, Ntergaid Inc., tells me that he will send me an interim fix, but there are no guarantees, since it hasn't been fully tested yet.
HAVE YOUR COMPUTER READ TO YOU
If you haven't tried something like monologue (MEDIA VISION) to use your computer to read text to you, you should definitely try it. A sound card makes the speech much better of course but it isn't essential. A great feature at midnight when your eyes are worn out, or for those with vision problems. I don't believe the old monologue 3.0 that I received with my sound board will work with a reader program like hyperreader but I will try to find out how this can be done since we remember 2 or 3 times as much if we see it and hear it. This capability can provide a nice option when the situation allows. If any readers have or know of a shareware program that will read hyperreader text please let me know, and the first to provide same will receive a free subscription.
*BEST WAY TO USE THIS TEXT.
You have several choices. I recommend reading the disclaimer through
Chapter 2 as you would any text, in a linear progression, with the exception that you jump to any topics or references that catch your interest as you proceed through this introductory and preview material. For chapters A-Z you can also proceed in a linear progression if you prefer, or you can use the "CONTENTS" button on the button bar to browse the subjects for each chapter and then select the underlined blue subject closest to the subjects of interest. Underlined blue is always a link. For these initial editions, I have not linked each subject area to the table of contents but have linked enough of the subjects so that a minimum of paging is necessary. You should be able to get within 3 or 4 screens of any subject of interest from the Contents. CTRL+ END and CTRL+ HOME will take you directly to the end or beginning of any topic. Any feedback on preferences or problems is welcome. Some subjects are less than full screen and links do take space and time from text and graphics so some browsing through the chapters to find subjects helps to limit file size, even though more links would make navigation to a specific point faster. Many of the major subjects are linked directly to the introductory chapters, wherever they are mentioned, even though they aren't all linked directly to the table of contents. When you want to jump to another referenced subject but the reference is not blue and underlined, it is not linked, so use the Contents or the Outline button. My address is in the Appendix 3 and in the registration topic (snail mail and e-mail) for any comments (REGISTRATION button is top right). The OUTLINE button gives you immediate access to any chapter (or topic in the case of the preface, references, etc.), without having to page or jump through the table of contents. The back button returns you to what are called link anchors, escape or right mouse, will do the same. The index button is not functional in this initial edition due the file size limits mentioned above. The notes button is available for any note taking you care to do.
Hyperwriter keeps a history of your movements in a hwhist00.tmp file so you can backtrack through many clicks if you get lost in cyberspace. The history files can be deleted of course when you are sure you will not need them, if you need the disk space. History files can be called up from the Navigation Menu if you want to use this method of navigating to subjects of interest or to go back to a topic to check something.
One other navigational feature and one possible quirk and we can get to more serious matters. I have used what are called word links for the appendices, preface, introduction, chapters, or references. These links look just like text, so if for example I mention appendix 4, you can click on it and be immediately ported there. Likewise, when you see (see references) you don't have to click on Outline and then references, just click on references and you will be there (left button to go, right button to come back). I have linked most initial references to a specific author (blue underlined link), but subsequent references are often word links that only take you to the references topic (again to limit file size). The possible quirk is your screen acting somewhat like a negative image occasionally. I have only had this happen on rare occasions, but if your screen does anything strange, use the Alt + R mentioned in the beginning of the Online Help, to redraw the screen, and all should be well.
PREVENT AND REVERSE MANY DISEASE PROCESSES!
Research from many different sources, including, journals, magazines, books, newspapers, files from the internet, and even reputable television reports, will be presented in this hypertext that never gets out of date. The emphasis will be on reported breakthroughs, on information that I don't feel has been disseminated widely, and on new preventive medicine topics, especially for major diseases like heart disease, osteoporosis, and several types of cancer, that can for many of us, be prevented. Methods of IQ enhancement, how pollution is affecting our health, and longevity will also be covered. Many of you will not believe some of the simple things that can be done to enhance your own learning ability as well as that of your loved ones, and with very little effort.
NEWS FROM UNPUBLISHED WORK, JUST RELEASED STUDIES, AS WELL AS HUNDREDS OF BOOKS, MANY HEALTH LETTERS, JOURNALS AND MAGAZINES, ALL IN ONE FAST HYPERTEXT ELECTRONIC DOCUMENT, and NO ADDS (yet)!
You would have to spend hundreds of dollars to subscribe to all of the newsletters and other documents that have been condensed for you here in one hypertext document. I have used a process similar to what is called metaanalysis which is being used to pool individual research studies to take several small studies and combine their results to come up with a more meaningful conclusion. I have taken the opinions of numerous authors and tried to develop an optimum lifestyle and diet based on the most common and generally accepted ideas of the group, using my own experience to pick out the most important items.
WHY WAIT A DECADE FOR SCIENTIFIC PROOF?
I had a younger brother suffering from Multiple Sclerosis about a decade ago. I was searching the nutrition and alternative medicine sources at the time because mainstream medicine, as good as it is for some conditions, could not do very much for him. If there had been an unproven cure available, I wanted to be able to tell him about it and didn't want to lose him because of the delays involved in getting a "reported cure" to the "proven cure" point. If there was just some evidence that a complementary treatment would work, I think most people are willing to simply change their eating habits or lifestyle or try a new herb that has been used in another country for years. Some members of my family suffer from a very mild cardiac condition called Atrial Fibrillation which causes what's called an irregularly irregular heartbeat which reduces cardiac output by about 30% which slows you down some on the tennis court and keeps you out of most competitive aerobic type sports, but does not generally affect longevity. However, if a cure is found for this condition, or if promising possible cures are developed, like several of the possible cures reported herein, I'm not the type who wants to wait a decade to try new research results for myself, especially when there are other family members or friends who would be very anxious to know about cures that appear to work, but have not been accepted by the medical community because they have not been scientifically proven.
*RISK OF USING SUPPLEMENTS LESS THAN THAT OF USING PRESCRIPTION DRUGS, AND LOOK AT THE BENEFITS!
When you are working with herbs and new supplements you don't have quite the same quality assurance that you have with the pharmaceutical firms but on the other hand, you have many dangerous but pure drugs being prescribed, that are for the most part, NOT naturally occuring substances like many herbs and supplements are, so the slight difference in "quality control risk," is only of concern when something very strange and very suspicious like the tryptophan contamination that occurred a year or two ago. Trying "reported cures" can be slightly risky because part of that decade of delay involves determining if there are any bad side effects that are occurring with the new 'cure' that weren't noticed or perhaps did not show up in the original study or report. If the reported cure or technique for reducing your risk of a certain disease is just a healthier lifestyle or a different diet, the risk is generally greatly outweighed by the possible reward, especially with many of the very serious diseases discussed herein. Dr. Marcus Laux is publishing a health newsletter (Naturally Immune for Life) and has stated that "186,000 people die each year from doctor caused illnesses, the vast majority from drugs". Compare this to ONE death that has been reported in the last DECADE due to vitamins (from the use of niacin to lower cholesterol, an FDA approved use). Contaminated imported tryptophan has caused some deaths (it is an amino acid, not a vitamin) but pure tryptophan has never caused any problems, so prescription drugs appear to be considerably more dangerous than vitamins or pure tryptophan and this safety advantage probably extends to many other supplements as well, except those noted under POTENTIALLY HARMFUL SUBSTANCES.
BILLIONS AND BILLIONS BEING SPENT ON UNNECESSARY PROCEDURES!
Over One Trillion dollars will be spent in America this year on health care. Over $100 BILLION will be spent on Cardiovascular Diseases, $44,000,000,000 on depression (Rath, and July/August 1994 Health Magazine). Is this amazing cost necessary when we have such strong evidence that heart disease and many other diseases can be reversed and when there are EFFECTIVE less costly alternatives to many of the high cost therapies that too many of us seem to gravitate to?
*INFORMATION IS CHANGING FAST - THIS IS A TWO MONTH UPDATE!
The information in the medical and health area is being generated faster and faster. The rate of change of information is even speeding up, along with the rate of generation. There are over 50 topics with asterisks in the table of contents and some of these topics have more than one change or update, and that is over just two months (and of course this is a small fraction of the changes). Only part of the added information is brand new, some is just very important, but the point is that an electronic text, that has a minimum of editing, allows you to receive information that is more current than any other comparable source that gives you one organized and easily searchable place to look for a great deal of very current information.
I hope the updating with boldface and asterisks to notate new or changed material will work satisfactorily. Since I haven't seen anyone publishing a text that they update every quarter (or even more often if desired), I'm open to comments and suggestions (See REGISTRATION for my address). If some of you are using difficult to read laptops, or other difficult to read screens, let me know, and I may be able to publish a totally boldface version for you. I have removed the boldface from the "basic text" for this update edition so that updates can be easily spotted by the new text being boldfaced (as well as the asterisks at the subject title). Electronic text lends itself readily to this kind of publishing since costs can be kept lower and there are more possibilities for differentiating new text from old than with most hard copy. Since I have used color for the headings, I doubt that colored text would work and there may be some readers with CGA or monochrome systems where some colors would not show up very well. Background variations for different quarters could present similar problems, so those are a few of the reasons that I am trying bold and normal appearance as the differentiator.
Shareware also lends itself to easier interactivity, so if you decide to register, feel free to send along any comments, suggestions, or experiences you have had in any of the areas discussed and your name may end up in print in a later edition. The text itself is of course interactive also since it is hypertext and great effort was expended to accomplish this to facilitate learning the material. After four years of post-graduate schooling and 10 years of teaching, the old adage about remembering 10% of what you read, 20% of what you hear, 30% of what you see, 50% of what you see and hear, 70% of what you say and 90% of what you say while demonstrating something or writing it on a blackboard, becomes well imbedded. The old adage is a good reminder of how much you learn when teaching someone else, thus the popularity of discussion groups on college campuses for studying. Now that we have the ability to publish interactive texts that can be almost as good as being in the classroom, we may have to modify the old adage by adding: 70% of what you see and hear and interact with. I strongly feel that the simple interactivity of being able to easily jump around to topics of interest will make learning more enjoyable as well as more stimulating, which I hope will enhance retention also.
COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE & CONTRADICTIONS IN LITERATURE.
I have endeavored to present as many topics as possible, to enable the reader to make an educated decision on what in Europe is being called Complementary Medicine, which is a term which I think is more appropriate than the use of Alternative Medicine, that seems to be more popular here in America. Some doctors are using a very strict interpretation of the two terms wherein Alternative Medicine would be used in place of, or as an alternate to conventional medicine. The Burton Goldberg Group in "Alternative Medicine-The Definitive Guide" state, "this book should not be substituted for the advice and treatment of a physician or other licensed health professional, but rather should be used in conjunction with professional care." I am not aware of anyone who is recommending Alternative Medicine as a replacement for orthodox medicine. I will also address some of the contradictions that appear in the literature which make it difficult to sort out the hype from the truth. (See CONTRADICTIONS)

If you can you are in the minority! Most of us are very resistant to change and in many ways this is beneficial and prevents us from adopting every new fad that comes along. In other ways this is not beneficial because we tend to be very resistant to changes that could in some cases save our lives. Many of us tend to be creatures of habit and if we aren't reminded of something every day or every week we revert to the old way of doing things. This is I hope where a text like this can be of benefit. With monthly or quarterly updates, there is motivation to look at the new material, and at the same time hopefully, some review of the old material will take place, reminding us of the promise we may have made to ourselves to be part of the 9% of Americans who eat five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, and that perhaps we have forgotten some of the reasons that we made ourselves that promise. Beside the updates, the text is always where you can find it for quick and easy reference when a question pops into your mind.

Many diseases are striking earlier and earlier and the evidence that the toxins, additives, empty calories, and bad fats in our diets is affecting our intelligence, health and longevity, is overwhelming. The good news is that there are many simple ways to avoid the pollutants and the associated problems, but it does require some reading, and a willingness to change lifestyles. Nature's rule is survival of the fittest, and for the next decade or more, the fittest may be those most willing to adapt to a changing environment.
WE HAVE MANY DISEASE EPIDEMICS THAT YOU DON'T HEAR MUCH ABOUT!
The disease epidemics that are discussed individually in the news media like breast cancer, heart disease, prostate cancer, aortic aneurysms, testicular cancer, etc., aren't discussed very much jointly, so many people are not aware that disease is less under control than we are often lead to believe. According to the September 1994 Scientific American, the rates of breast cancer, multiple myeloma and brain cancer have been rising for several decades and are about five times higher in the U.S. than in some Pacific Rim countries and up to 50 times higher than in less developed countries (Davis, D.,et al ). All of the other diseases I mentioned have increased several fold in the last few decades also with the exception of Heart Disease. Great fanfare is made concerning the reductions in heart disease that have occurred but I would say that the fact that more than 7 million Americans were diagnosed with Coronary Heart Disease last year, would probably put it in the category of an epidemic in most peoples minds.
The incidence of aortic aneurysms in the abdomen has become three times more common (a 300% increase) in the last 40 years in America, partly because of our poor diets, but many of these aneurysms are caused by atherosclerosis, so this trend can easily be reversed (See also EPIDEMICS).
DON'T EXPECT YOUR DOCTOR TO TELL YOU HOW TO PREVENT DISEASE!
We can't expect our medical doctors to be experts on nutrition, toxicology, and prevention of disease, as well as medicine. Only about 25% of medical schools even offer nutrition courses, and there are no questions covering nutrition and health on the National Board Exams for physicians. In a 1988 landmark publication, "Role of the Primary Care Physician in Occupational Environmental Medicine," an expert committee of the National Academy of Sciences concluded that almost the entire medical field is functionally illiterate on the subject of the low-level toxicology of industrial pollution and pesticides. This same committee concluded that toxic chemicals are playing an increasing role in the onset of disease and death. We all need to take charge of our own health or we will find ourselves undergoing expensive procedures and surgery that could have been avoided. (Steinman, p. 10)
DON'T BELIEVE THE "EXPERTS" WHO SAY "SUPPLEMENTS ARE A WASTE OF MONEY"
Some of the experts who say that supplements are a waste of money are just extremely cautious and perhaps unaware of the preponderance of evidence
that indicates the opposite. Other "expert's" in the field of nutrition may find it difficult to disregard the influence of the wealthy pharmaceutical firms. I am sure you have heard or read "experts" who call almost everything outside of orthodox medicine quackery. Dr. LINUS PAULING dedicated a major portion of his life to the study of nutrition, and as most of you know, has been one of the most noteworthy scientists advocating the use of supplemental vitamins during this century. Dr. PAULING has been reported by various sources to have used somewhere between 8 and 18 grams of Vitamin C per day. He was awarded 2 Nobel prizes and 48 honorary doctoral degrees in his long and distinguished career. He was 93 when he died recently (19 August 1994) at his 160 acre ranch in Big Sur, CA. Dr. PAULING has certainly not been the only authoritative voice encouraging Americans to use supplemental vitamins when they don't get adequate amounts in their diet. No one can get optimum amounts of vitamin C from their diet and it is very difficult to get optimum amounts of vitamin E. Many of the major health newsletters are citing the research showing the benefits of taking extra vitamin C, E, and others. I have referenced The University of California at Berkeley Wellness Reports, the Harvard Health Letter (from Harvard Medical School), the Johns Hopkins White Papers, and many others, throughout this text, and although there still seems to be some lingering bias against vitamins, as Dr. PAULING has noted, the bias is gradually being overcome by the preponderance of evidence in favor of using supplements.
Because I consider Dr. PAULING to be this centuries leader of Preventive Nutritional Medicine, I have capitalized his name throughout the text. A distinguished scientist like Dr. PAULING and many others are of course further removed from "quackery" than many orthodox medical doctors who prescribe unnecessary medical procedures. Certainly there is a lot of hype in some of the nutrition catalogs and a lot of claims based on weak or even non-existent evidence, but calling everything in complementary medicine quackery is just as ridiculous as calling everything in orthodox medicine quackery. Using supplemental vitamins is only a small aspect of Complementary Medicine, but when asked if they take vitamins, a crowd of mostly cardiologists recently got a surprise. By a show of hands, it was obvious that about two-thirds of these doctors did so, and on a daily basis. They are very intelligent people and understand the importance of proper nutrition.

Amazing new discoveries are being made every week, through the use of molecular biology, epidemiology (population studies), as well as the older tried and true research techniques. These discoveries are revealing the most likely causes of major killers like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and many other disorders. DIET AFFECTS CANCER & HEART DISEASE RISKS, & BIRTH DEFECTS!
Ronald Klatz, D.O., president and founder of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, believes that you can reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke to near zero, and your chances of getting cancer by more than 75% (Longevity, June 1994, p. 96)! From all the evidence I've seen, I have to agree! Even the well respected journal Science, published a very good article on "Diet and Health: What Should We Eat?," (22 April 1994, p. 532-537) written by Walter Willett, with the Departments of Nutrition and Epidemiology, Harvard School of Public Health, who stated:
"MANY RECENT STUDIES HAVE IMPLICATED DIETARY FACTORS IN THE CAUSE AND PREVENTION OF IMPORTANT DISEASE, INCLUDING CANCER, CORONARY HEART DISEASE, BIRTH DEFECTS, AND CATARACTS. THERE IS STRONG EVIDENCE THAT VEGETABLES AND FRUITS PROTECT AGAINST THESE DISEASES..." (My capital letters)
Many experts agree that about 90% of us will develop some atherosclerosis during our lifetime. This plaque build up in the arteries leads to numerous problems that will be discussed throughout the text, and for most people these problems are easily avoidable. Expensive bypass surgery, balloon angioplasty, and the "roto-rooter" atherectemies are not necessary for most people, if they could just be convinced that lifestyle changes will reverse the plaque build up. Even the new technique that uses what is called a stent and does not close back up as fast during the first year after surgery (as is the case with most bypass surgery, most angioplasty, and most atherectemies) is bound to be more expensive and more dangerous than improving your diet and lifestyle (The Johns Hopkins White Papers, 1994). You don't have to wait for scientific proof. I can almost guarantee that the proof will arrive sometime in the next decade but read about all of the evidence and decide for yourself whether or not it is time for serious lifestyle or dietary modifications!
*IS THIS THE "MIRACLE CURE" OF THE CENTURY?
Matthias Rath, M.D., former director of Cardiovascular Research at the Linus PAULING Institute of Science and Medicine in Palo Alto, CA, authored a small paperback in 1993 entitled "Eradicating Heart Disease," and he believes that nutrition and lifestyle changes can be used to eradicate heart disease as I explain under the heading HEART DISEASE. You will most likely not believe the list of diseases that Dr. Rath believes can now be completely eradicated using optimal nutrition and lifestyle. I am a skeptic by nature also and will be amazed if we can eradicate all of them with such simple changes but I have witnessed the power of optimal nutrition and lifestyle and the more I investigate his claims, the less skeptical I become. The American Heart Association has said that 84% of all disease caused deaths in this country are the result of hardening of the arteries of one form or another so it really is basically a deposition of material in both arteries and organs that is causing the large majority of our disease deaths. I received Dr. Rath's new book "Why Animals Don't Get Heart Attacks... But Humans Do," on 8 November 1994. Dr. Rath has condensed some of the information from "Eradicating Heart Disease," into a smaller booklet (58 pages), and has added updated material. He shows a picture of the patent that he was granted for his "Reverse Heart Disease Without Surgery Therapy" that is described under HEART DISEASE. It is described as the First Patented Therapy to Reverse Heart Disease Without Surgery, and Dr. Rath states, "the U.S. Patent Office has reviewed the available scientific evidence and has approved the use of lysine, synthetic lysine analogs and vitamin C for the prevention and the reversal of atherosclerotic deposits and of cardiovascular disease." I feel certain that Dr. Rath has a valid therapy here and that the national media will take note before long. Everyone should consider using the inexpensive lysine and vitamin C supplements since experts estimate that about 90 % of us have some degree of atherosclerosis. The reason that animals don't get heart attacks, according to Dr. Rath is that they make their own vitamin C which we have lost the ability to do.
DR. RATH BELIEVES THE FOLLOWING DISEASES CAN BE ERADICATED:
Diabetes, Morbus Cushing, Addison's disease, and other hormonal disorders leading to cardiovascular diseases;
Alzheimer's Disease, neurofibromatosis, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and other disorders of the nervous system which also involve the cardiovascular system;
Rheumatoid arthritis, polyarteritis, lupus erythematosus, scleroderma and other immunological disorders which also involve the cardiovascular system;
inherited disorders of the connective tissue;
Homocystinuria;
Amyloidosis;
Scleroderma;
Cystic Fibrosis.
Impossible right! Well, we may never eradicate them, even if Dr. Rath is right and has shown us how we can eradicate them. Why?
1. Because we have a very poor system for disseminating nutritional or lifestyle changing cures to begin with.
2. Some people are so addicted to their lifestyle that they simply cannot switch to a no smoking lifestyle or to a lifestyle that involves exercise, or to one that entails a "prudent diet" that includes supplements. Human nature is such that change does not come easily for most of us, myself included.
3. Some people will proclaim any nutritional cure as quackery.
4. There are many people who's livelihood depends on disease, and a few will try to discredit information such as this for fallacious reasons.
NO CONFLICT OF INTEREST!
This may be a good place to give you my word that I have absolutely no connection or interest in any vitamin or supplement companies. I have provided the names of some firms that I have used as a service to you but I promise that I do not stand to gain anything if you chose to use them.
MANY DISEASES INVOLVE DEPOSITION OF MATERIAL.
Dr. Rath presents a fairly convincing argument for the elimination of much disease that involves deposition of material in arterial walls and in many body tissues, with a resulting impairment of function. More evidence for this can be found under HEART DISEASE, ALZHEIMER'S, and elsewhere.
SCIENTIFIC PROOF TAKES A LONG TIME TO ESTABLISH.
Any new information takes a long time to be accepted by the medical community because scientific consensus requires independent labs to perform double blind studies on humans to be able to change orthodox medical procedures or to even allow health, longevity, or IQ enhancement claims on the labels of nutrients. This kind of research takes a long time to accomplish and requires a lot of money, but this is what the medical community rightfully demands for scientific proof. In this electronic text, I will sort out the evidence that is worth trying from the more than 600 references that I have used over the last few decades, and will show you easy ways to improve three major factors in your life and the lives of your loved ones; HEALTH, INTELLIGENCE OR INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT, AND LONGEVITY. I will also discuss the relationship of these factors with pollution and ecology, since the continuing population and pollution explosion is affecting the health of every man, woman, and child in the world.
WHY WAIT FOR SCIENTIFIC PROOF IF THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THAT A DISEASE CAN BE PREVENTED WITH A HEATHIER LIFESTYLE, A HEALTHIER DIET, OR JUST A DIFFERENT BALANCE OF NATURALLY OCCURING NUTRIENTS!
A lot of the information herein will NOT be based on scientific proof because in many instances, there may never be scientific proof or scientific consensus. For most people there is no need to wait years for scientific proof if the discovery is a simple lifestyle or dietary change which MAY benefit a symptom or a disease that is otherwise difficult to deal with. It is unlikely that a several month dietary or lifestyle change (more exercise, more relaxation, no more BHA or BHT in the diet, more or less natural light exposure, a different balance of nutrients, etc.) will seriously increase ones risk of a certain problem if there is some evidence that it has helped some people.
LITTLE PROFIT MARGIN IN NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS (NO PATENTS).
If there is no drug that can be patented and sold for a nice profit, to recoup some of the research funding, the pharmaceutical firms cannot be expected to be interested, and the government funding in these areas is fairly limited. I have prepared a letter for your use in Appendix 4 that can be used as you see fit to forward to any of your elected representatives or to the White House to try to get increased funding to improve the health of America. If enough of us act, we can get more research done to move some of these therapies into mainstream medicine. Addresses are in Appendix 3. Remember, topic titles like Appendix 4, or Conclusion, are "hot" and can be selected for immediate transport, even though they aren't underlined and colored blue like the other links.
TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR HEALTH!
It therefore falls on each of us to take charge of our own health, the health of our children, or parents, or family, when so much is at stake. We can enhance the intelligence and reduce the likelihood of developing disease for our loved ones by the simple use of dietary and lifestyle changes that can also reduce health care costs and the need for risky surgery. Taking charge can mean doing some reading of a text such as this, or it may mean consulting friends, family members or others, either outside or inside the mainstream medical community, to stay up to date on what is also called Natural Medicine. It also means putting some of the information to use by making some dietary and lifestyle changes. Using health information that has not been rigorously proven does not have to be risky, and has a very good chance of helping us and our children become smarter and healthier.
VERY FEW "CURES" ARE 100% EFFECTIVE!
Even if you wait the decade for all the double blind, controlled studies to be done, look at the latest fiasco in breast cancer research in the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP). See the 30 April 1994 Science News, "Breast Cancer Research On Trial," and "More data flaws mar breast cancer trials," for two current reviews of the horrendous toll of the false data from Roger Poisson at St. Luc's Hospital in Montreal, and now data from Tulane University and Louisiana State University is being questioned as well. Sometimes you have to wait a second decade to see if the "valid" research is really valid and of course you still can't be 100% sure! You might as well take charge and use a healthier lifestyle and diet and consider trying some "non scientifically proven information" that has some evidence of a preventive effect while you wait for the scientific proof! We can help establish the validity of some of these revolutionary ideas by trying them and passing the results to the FDA. Let me know what success you have and I will collate the information and forward it to the White House and the FDA.
MOST OF THE BREAST CANCER EPIDEMIC CAN BE ERADICATED WITH IMPROVED DIET AND LIFESTYLE!
See the section titled BREAST CANCER and see if you don't agree that as much as 70% of the breast cancer in the U.S. appears to be caused by diet and lifestyle. Some is certainly caused by pesticides, herbicides, and pollution, but many of those toxins are in the animal fat that we voluntarily eat because that is what we're used to. Yes genetics plays a role, but it is a minor role. There are five fold differences in the amount of BREAST CANCER in certain countries which many experts attribute to different diets and lifestyles! The kind of fat we eat is a major factor in many diseases and it may be the toxins in the fat that is causing much of the breast cancer epidemic! We may find a small percentage of people that have adverse reactions to a diet higher in omega 3 fatty acids (fish and flaxseed oil) or monounsaturated fatty acids (olive oil) for instance, but if the result is a significantly reduced amount of multiple sclerosis, heart disease, breast cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and so on, I don't think a few adverse reactions will be unworthy of the results. MANY DRUGS COME FROM FOODS
A single food may contain hundreds or thousands of chemicals, MOST UNIDENTIFIED, so it should not be surprising that foods have great powers to heal or to cause disease. Many of our drugs are identified and concentrated from different plants, but then a synthetic version must me made that is patentable so that research costs can be recouped.

CHAPTER 1 LET'S STOP THE SUFFERING

MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ARE NEEDLESSLY DYING AND SUFFERING!
We have millions of people suffering or dying from cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and other major diseases but the information is available NOW to avoid much of this tragedy in the future and to curb much of this suffering NOW. Dr. James Scala in his excellent 1992 book, "Prescription For Longevity," stated that "over 60 percent of all deaths are diet-related". This means that over five people in America die every two minutes from an illness that eating correctly could have either prevented completely or put off into the future."
The challenge is in getting people to change their diets and lifestyle for the sake of health, or longevity. The information is available now to enhance our intelligence through lifestyle modification but it will take years to convince everyone, possibly even decades. Fortunately, the changes are getting easier to make each year. See Cancer, Diabetes, Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, etc..
POOR LIFESTYLE KILLS SLOWLY!
Susan Powter states in her 1993 book, "Stop the Insanity," that "85% of all disease can be directly attributed to life-style." By lifestyle we generally mean diet, supplements, smoking habits, exercise habits, whether you live next to Love canal or sunbathe 3 hours a week, etc. These are mostly things that we can change, if we can just convince ourselves that the outcome will be worth the effort! See EXERCISE, POLLUTION, OPTIMUM NUTRIENTS, etc.
EATING BREAKFAST COULD SAVE A LIFE!
Many authors are saying that we really don't have a health care system, its more of a disease care system, and that seems like a better way to describe our "health care system," to me. It's not entirely the fault of "the system," because we don't go to the doctor to prevent disease, we go when we have symptoms. We need to get the insurance companies to reimburse us for preventive medicine or get the White House to create some tax advantages for prevention (See Letter to the White House in Appe ndix 4). Did you know that a 10 year UCLA study showed that death rates were 40% higher for men and 28% higher for women who "rarely or sometimes" ate BREAKFAST.
CHILDREN, HYPERACTIVITY, & ATHEROSCLEROSIS
Too many of our children are hyperactive, (also known as attention deficit disorder). See HYPERACTIVE for the latest on an easy nutritional cure that is working for some families. Too many of us are eating hot dogs or hamburgers twice a week or letting our kids eat too much junk food and letting them triple their risk of cancer and heart disease! SOME CANCERS CAN BE CURED OR AVOIDED BY CHANGING YOUR DIET. Are your children among the majority who eat less than one serving of fruit per day. Do they eat any vegetables or are they starting the plaque build up in their arteries even earlier than many of us did (See ATHEROSCLEROSIS)? Research described as recently as 9 November shows that it is not good to try to control the amount of food your child eats but the same researchers (Dr. Susan Johnson, whose work was published in the November issue of Pediatrics) said that parents are still responsible for making sure children eat healthy food. Too much control of the amount that our children eat results in obese children.
BAD FATS KILL CHILDREN SLOWLY
The surgeon general even declared in 1988 that the nation's rich diet is our number-one health hazard! Help boycott the foods loaded with saturated fat and partially hydrogenated fats (trans fatty acids) and let's get the junk food off the shelves so our children aren't bombarded by both pollutants and junk food! Atherosclerosis begins in some children around age 10 so let's get the high saturated fat foods off of the shelves. Many experts even believe whole milk and cheese made from whole milk is unsafe for most people now because it contains 74 percent FAT!
SATURATED FAT, & trans FATTY ACIDS ARE KILLING MILLIONS!
I think that very few people truly believe the saying YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT. Unfortunately, we are finding more and more how very true this statement is. The SATURATED FAT and the trans FATTY ACIDS in our foods slowly kills many adults as well as children. Use the DO IT RIGHT DIET in the Conclusion to halt the hardening of your arteries which some experts say is causing 84% of the deaths in America and costing hundreds of billions of dollars. If we adults eat a healthy diet, more of the children will do the same and the food producers will catch on and quit selling the foods loaded with bad fats.

THE RULE IS EAT A BALANCED DIET! RESEARCH SHOWS THAT ONLY ABOUT 3-10% OF AMERICANS DO SO!
We eat too much beef and animal fat and not enough fruits and vegetables! When we do eat more fruits and vegetables we have to worry about which ones are safe do to the overuse of pesticides by many growers! Our milk, especially whole milk, is becoming a dangerous food. There are many food additives still being used that are dangerous and effect the intelligence of our children.
More and more evidence is proving that YOU REALLY ARE WHAT YOU EAT ! And its not just the food you eat that makes you what you are! Even the water you drink can affect your health as well as your IQ! As we learn more and more about the effects of various chemicals on the body, it becomes more and more important to take advantage of this valuable information. Especially since we've been polluting our planet for many decades without realizing how easily toxins can get into the water supply and get biologically concentrated in foods, and then cause "disease epidemics".
There are many things that can be done to improve your health, and IQ, and decrease your risk of cancer, heart disease and other major killers. By changing eating habits and making other lifestyle changes you can improve your health, control your weight, and take charge of your longevity. Increased longevity means increased population density though and increased pollution, and pollution is already out of control, so the remainder of the century will not be without its challenges.

A group of EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) scientists did report in May (1994) that cancer is NOT the most serious health hazard from DIOXIN at common exposure levels. You can probably sweat out most of that dioxin along with many of the other toxins that are building up in your body. IS IT TRUE THAT THE FDA FOUND POLY CHLORINATED BIPHENYLS IN ALL SEAFOOD THEY TESTED? Yes! IS THE POLLUTION AFFECTING ALL OF OUR FOOD? Certain food items like bananas are safer than others but Organically grown food is becoming the safest route to untainted food. See POLLUTION. MOST POLLUTANTS CONCENTRATE IN ANIMAL FAT, RIGHT? Yes! MULTIPLE TOXIN EXPOSURE IS A VERY DIFFICULT PROBLEM!
WHY IS THE EPA ALLOWING ALL OF THIS POLLUTION IN THE ENVIRONMENT IF IT IS AFFECTING THE INTELLIGENCE OF OUR CHILDREN AND SLOWLY KILLING US? That is an excellent question! As best I can determine, the EPA is trying to do the best they can with the funds that they have. It takes a lot of money to monitor and enforce environmental regulations and few of us like the idea of more taxes. The chemical industry does of course have a powerful lobby who try to influence EPA and government officials and of course they have some success. We need to do some of our own grass roots lobbying and I have provided a letter addressed to President and Mrs. Clinton in Appendix 4 to assist and encourage you to let the White House (or whoever else you chose to address) know of our growing concerns in this area. Unfortunately there is no good scientific model or technique for determining risk of exposure to multiple chemicals (Steinman, 1990). The EPA has had to base their safe levels on the assumption that we don't eat a diet that consists of a significant number of tainted foods, which a decade or two ago, may have been a safe assumption. Today it is looking more and more like this is NOT a safe assumption and I hope they are addressing this since their own data has shown that actual intake at times exceeds recommended daily intake by more than 500%. I will try to find out what progress is being made in this area for next quarter. Safe levels need to be lowered to reflect the multiple toxins that many of us have been exposed to for years. The EPA also needs more power to enforce the laws that have been passed because very little enforcement is occurring. Even though the toxin levels have been very low, the evidence cited herein indicates that years of exposure could be causing an unbelievable amount of harm! This problem is mentioned in the letter to President Clinton in appendix 4 which I have sent and I hope some of you will send.
REDUCE FAT AND PROTEIN INTAKE?
LOTS OF BOOKS SAY REDUCING YOUR FAT INTAKE CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE, OTHERS SAY CUTTING BACK ON PROTEIN CAN EXTEND YOUR LIFE AND REDUCE YOUR RISK OF DISEASE! WHO'S RIGHT? The average American eats too much fat, the wrong kind of fat and too much protein. The DO IT RIGHT DIET found in the Conclusion is a more Mediterranean style of eating to take advantage of the flavonoids in most fruits and vegetables that help prevent the first step in atherosclerosis, the oxidation of LDL. A study published in the October 23, 1993 Lancet ("Compound in Fruits and Vegetables Lowers CHD Risk") found a 50% reduction in CHD (Coronary Heart Disease) risk in those with the highest intake of flavonoids (eg. apples, onions, green vegetables, grains, black tea). The DO IT RIGHT DIET also reduces saturated fats and trans fats in exchange for the healthier olive oil type fat which is monounsaturated, and fish oil, which we need more of.
REDUCE VIOLENCE!
IS THERE ANYTHING TO THESE CLAIMS THAT VIOLENCE IN OUR SOCIETY CAN BE DECREASED THROUGH BETTER NUTRITION AND LIFESTYLE? Yes, but more research is needed here as in many areas!
DECREASE CANCER RISK!
CAN I REALLY DECREASE MY RISK OF CANCER SIGNIFICANTLY ? Definitely! Joseph Rodricks, author of "Calculated Risks," states that "Somewhere between 70% and 90% of human cancers appear to be of environmental origin. Here "environmental" is used very broadly, and refers to anything not genetic. It refers not only to industrial chemicals and pollutants, but includes factors such as diet, sexual habits, smoking behavior, and natural and manmade radiation." You have a great deal of control over what your cancer risk is if you take advantage of what we know today about what the greatest risk factors are!
ARE VITAMINS SAFE?
HOW DOES THE SAFETY RECORD OF VITAMINS COMPARE TO THAT OF DRUGS ? "The total number of fatalities from overdoses of major pharmaceutical drugs for the eight - year period from 1983 to 1990 equals 2,556, whereas the total number of fatalities resulting from high doses of vitamin supplements during the same period is zero." That's actually a conservative estimate, and I think it applies to healthy people presently in their 60's or maybe even 70's, if they adopt the lifestyle laid out herein in the very near future. Healthier foods will gradually make it to the market as many already have but if we don't get more people to stop buying the junk food that is high in bad fats, loaded with bad additives, or loaded with sugar, salt, etc., it could take forever to get a decent selection of healthy foods. Those of us who are lucky enough to be younger than 60 have decades of amazing developments ahead of us in the field of gerontology that will help slow down the aging process further as we cross the millennium. IS IT TRUE THAT MORE AMERICANS ARE VISITING PROVIDERS OF ALTERNATIVE THERAPY THAN PRIMARY CARE DOCTORS NOW? That is evidently what an article in the Jan. 1993 New England Journal of Medicine stated.
F IGHT VIRUSES BETTER
IS THERE REALLY NOTHING PEOPLE WITH AIDS AND OTHER VIRUSES CAN DO TO ENHANCE THEIR CHANCES OF BEATING THE VIRUS OTHER THAN THE ANTI-VIRAL DRUGS WHICH DON'T APPEAR TO BE VERY EFFECTIVE? Medical Doctors in high positions have to reply to that question, if it is a public statement, with something like; "There is no scientific proof that any lifestyle changes can affect survival rate of people with AIDS." This is about what the head of the research effort to find a cure for AIDS said in a television interview in the first quarter of 1994, but if we were in a similar position we would have to be very conservative in making public statements also. If Medical Doctors recommend non-scientifically proven remedies, they open themselves up for malpractice suits, being ostracized by peers, etc. That doesn't mean that there isn't some strong evidence that lifestyle changes might help, and it doesn't mean that you would get exactly the same answer in a private conversation.
SOME AUTHORS SAY SUGAR AND VARIOUS FOOD ADDITIVES ARE BAD, SOME SAY THEY ARE OK-WHO'S RIGHT? This touches on an amazing subject! See INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT and learn how the students in New York City public schools EXPERIENCED A STANDARDIZED SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT TEST SCORE INCREASE FROM THE 39th percentile to the 55th percentile in 4 years, when they decreased the amount of sugar in the foods served in schools and banned all synthetic food colorings and flavorings, as well as the two common additives BHA and BHT. Before these changes were made, the academic performance of the students never varied more than 1% up or down during the course of a year!
DOES ALL THIS INFORMATION AFFECT OUR CHILDREN?
Most of it does, yes, in fact young children can be more susceptible to things like the lead in the environment mentioned above, and impaired learning ability is something we should not inflict on our children. This is the type of question that text search ability will be good for, which subscribers can get with one of the next editions of this text. Children are discussed specifically under many topics (Allergies, IQ, Immunity, etc.) and I feel this is an especially critical area. We've got to get rid of the disease causing junk foods and IQ decreasing substances in our environment before our children are more seriously effected.

CAN SUBSTANCES LIKE SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASE, CATALASE, SELENIUM, GLUTATHIONE PEROXIDASE REALLY AFFECT LONGEVITY?
IF MOST OF THESE THINGS ARE TRUE, WHY DOESN'T MY DOCTOR KNOW ABOUT ALL OF THIS? As I mentioned in the preface, doctors have a ton of things to learn just to try to master conventional medicine. They have to stick with the tried and true and thoroughly proven and locally accepted treatments or they might be subject to criticism or even worse, malpractice. Many physicians have left conventional medicine because they DO find out that prevention and complementary or alternative therapies work, and many are helping to spread the word with newsletters and books or setting up "integrated practices" where they use alternative as well as conventional medicine (Elson Haas is but one example, with his recent switch in "alternative emphasis" from Chinese medicine, herbology and guided imagery to the use of more "Scientific Nutrition" as he puts it in, "Staying Healthy with Nutrition"). This departure from the mainstream does not usually go over well with colleagues of course but people are demanding it and even major hospitals are looking hard at complementary medicine.

ARE WE DOOMED TO EXTINCTION BY OUR OWN POLLUTION COMBINED WITH A PANDEMIC EVEN WORSE THAN AIDS ?
Whether our next challenge comes from another Sadam Hussein, from our own pollution and population explosion, from a new microbe or SUPERBUG (see
anti - biotics), from earthquakes, rising oceans, or from aliens or a microbe brought by aliens, I'm not sure we have enough Norman Schwarzkophs to deal with the next crisis as well as General Schwarzkoph and his men (and his superiors) dealt with Sadam Hussein. There are several scenarios that could bring on a sudden climate change like our own pollution effects on the biosphere. As T. Graedel, et al, put it (Managing Planet Earth, Readings from Scientific American) "...the prospect of a sudden temperature increase of even a few degrees Celsius is disquieting because no one can accurately predict its environmental effects, such as what the precise changes will be in precipitation around the world and in sea level. Any effects will probably be rapid, however, making it extremely difficult or impossible for the world's ecosystems and for human societies to adapt". We are finding more and more evidence of sudden (30 yard sea level changes in 100 years) climate changes that have occurred on their own as the tectonic plates that make up the crust of our planet continue their never ending movement.
